And Sophie also hears that name when she's riding a horse and having a flashback. There are a few points in the first three episodes where we hear Sophie called "Tess." The woman who rescued her says that's what Sophie said her name was. And then in the edit in the choices that we make and the pacing of the show and how much you reveal. They're all complex characters and that balance is very much achieved in the performances but also through Sam Miller's direction. It's a fine line certainly for characters like James on how much to reveal. How did you achieve making all the people in Sophie's life a little bit suspicious?

It made us discuss that essential question: Is it ever appropriate to withhold information from somebody? What would you do if there are dark and uncomfortable things in somebody's past and they have a fresh start? Is it the kindest thing to tell them everything? Or, the moral dilemma, should you omit some of the more traumatic or unpalatable parts of their past and free them from that burden? The show constantly treads that line so that was an interesting point of reference for the moral dilemma, certainly for James in the show. Then the other one decides to omit certain things from their past not only to protect his brother but also to protect himself. And they had a quite traumatic childhood.
We looked at Tell Me Who I Am, which is quite a dark and heavy-hitting Netflix documentary about a pair of twins, one of whom loses his memory. The interesting thing that we explore a bit in the show is how it affects the people around you - how hard it is to go through it yourself, but it's also very tough on the people in relationship to you. We did some research, read a lot of articles and then plunged into the material of the psychological thriller.ĭid you learn anything about amnesia that surprised you or that you didn't know before? But beyond that it's very much a work of fiction from Veronica's incredibly complex imagination. Veronica, Sam Miller, and myself had a couple of sessions with a memory loss expert who talked us through certain types of situations and how you might experience flashbacks and at what point you can actually retrieve memories once you've been through something like this. How much research did you do to understand amnesia? I think it gives you more chances to be creative with your choices. You have to pretend that you don't know things a lot of the time. That enables me to pace the journey and I think you always want the biggest arc that you can possibly have, the biggest journey - for your character to start one place and end up somewhere else.
